RE: Oregon/California border, agricultural inspection?

During my past two trips out of CA, I was stopped on the way back.
On Route 15 between Las Vegas and CA I was stopped and they actually inspected what was in my refrigerator. On the next trip, they just inquired if I had any fruit.

RE: Trip across US

Monterey is a nice place, but can be foggy and dismal at times. There are a lot of RV parks on the roads along the shoreline.
There is a nice Navy Lodge in Monterey and a military RV park (which I've never stayed in).
Enjoy your trip. The Rocky MT's will be impressive, as you might see them for a good day before you actually experience them.
I had one issue when I was driving my daughters Caravan across country from the East coast to the West coast. The engine over heated on my first try over one of the passes. It turned out that the radiator and issues due to the salt from the roads in the NE. Had to have it replaced before I could get over the "hills"

RE: 2 way radios

You might check Radio Shack for a wireless intercom. I have one that uses AC or rechargeable batteries. rechargearechargeable can lock one of the stations on, so you can hear everything in the ara. The batteries last quite a while (rechargeable not actually measured the time), and they recharge when you plug the unit into AC. RS Part number 43-3102.

RE: XM Radio

I recently purchased two XM radios. One has the Mini-doc feature, which I had planned to use in the house and RV. However the connection cables for the mini-doc to my RV, JVC radio are not yet available.
SO I purchased a XM compatible radio for the house that uses the mini-doc and picked up an Inno to use in my living room and in the RV. I had the INNO installed at Circuit City for about $75. Works great. There is a "docking station" on my dashboard for the Inno and I have another in the house. I just move the radio between the two.
On a trip across the country about a month ago, I had trouble finding any AM/FM stations that I enjoyed. Now with XM that's not an issue + the Emergency channel is handy for incidents in the country. Best investment I have made.

Summary
Yosemite National Park is currently conducting an approximately 2000-acre prescribed fire near the communityof Wawona, near Yosemite's south entrance. It is estimated this project will take one to two weeks to complete. It is to be burned in three units. Unit I is 737 acres. It is bounded to the northwest by the Jack fire, west to the Wawona Road (Highway 41 outside the park), and south along the Chilnualna Falls Road. The prime benefit of this burn is to enhance defensible space, providing important fire protection for the community of Wawona. Fire managers want to take advantage of last fall's Jack fire and last spring's prescribed fire near the community. Fire personnel will utilize these burned areas as barriers to fire spreading north and east of the project area. It will also burn through recent fuel treatments, including thinning and pile burning, in addition to recent prescribed fires. These recent projects will increase the margin of safety for firefighters by reducing fire intensity along the project boundary.
Basic Information
Incident Type Prescribed Fire
Cause N/a
Date of Origin 04/09/2008 at 00 hrs.
Location Yosemite National Park

Current Situation
Total Personnel Not available
Size 700 acres
Significant Events Not available
Outlook
Planned Actions Firefighters from the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service made good progress over the weekend on the large prescribed fire adjacent to the community of Wawona. The heaviest smoke impacts wioll be for the next two or three nights (Mon-Wed) as crews bring the fire down to the Wawona Road near the UC Merced Research Station and then turn the corner, progressing up the Wawona Road toward Mosquito Creek.
Remarks Motorists should expect traffic delays, one-way traffic control and are advised to proceed slowly through smoke with lights on. Smoke concentrations in the Wawona Campground for the next two to three nights will be very unhealthful and anyone hoping to camp there should reconsider. This project protects the community of Wawona from a wildfire moving up the South Fork of the Merced and is funded under the National Fire Plan. Wawona is a Federally-listed community at high risk from wildfires.

RE: Camp Near Washington D.c.

My wife and I stayed at Cherry Hill last month. Excellent park. 26 degrees at night (rough on the old folks from Southern California). Not many people there in March. I suspect you might want to get reservations during the summer months. There were a lot of things for the kids to do in the park. Staff was very helpful.

RE: I 20

I drove route 20 from the East to the West about a month ago. There was some construction on in the East bound lanes near the LA/GA border. Remainder was much better than route 10, which we used Eastbound. You may need the Air Conditioner once you get into TX

RE: Parker,Arizona Winds???

My wife and I cam across AZ into CA about a week ago. Had to stop in Blyth CA due to winds in excess of 50 mph. The next day they were blowing 30 to 40, but we made it back to home in CA. Tonight the high winds are back all across SCA. Be prepared to stop if it gets too windy

RE: Me 'n my CB,,, radio, that is!

I am just completing a trip from SCA to MD and back in less than 2 weeks. We went East on route 10 to 85 and then up to MD. Coming back we picked up route 20 in Atlanta and went across to 10 and back home. We saw many RV's with CB antennas, but calls on Channel 13 were unanswered. I suspect many have radios to call on channel 19 in an emergency, but due to the "talk" on 19, probably have their radios turned off.
Why dont we all monitor ch13? I suspect the conversations might be a lot "cleaner" than on 19. If you want your might be able to do a dual watch on 13 and 19.
Lets make CH 13 the RV channel and be able to say Hi to each other!!

RE: Whose on the road in the wind and severe weather warnings?

My wife and I were returning to SCA from MD via Route 20/10. It was windy thru AZ and we had to reduce speed. When we crossed over the river into CA, it became very windy. Even at 55 mph it was difficult to stay on the road. Pulled off and are spending the night in Blythe CA. Try again tomorrow

RE: HAM RADIO in Da "B"

I just purchased my first RV. A Airstream Interstate. I've put a D710 (144/440) APRS radio in and am in the process of installing a HF Yeasu 857, and Tarheel screwdriver antenna. The antennas are mounted on either side of the hood. I also have a CB radio which I can hook up to the Tarheel screwdriver antenna if needed.
Are there any HF RV nets? Is 146.52 used by RV'ers for contact on 2Meters?

RE: Need help planning a 8-10 week trip NC to CA and back again

Congratulations on the retirement. I did the same thing while in the Military. Six trips across the country in less than a week each time. My wife and I purchased a small RV last week and plan to go East on a trip.
Stop by the BX/PX and pick up a Military camping Guide. There are quite a few resort areas with RV parking.
Grand Canyon is very nice. A large RV area.
Have a good trip

RE: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESS

Before you chose any carrier, especially due to cost of the service, check and make sure they have coverage in the area that you normally hang out. Some carriers are much better than others on coverage. Most carriers have maps that show actual coverage. Look closely at the maps to make sure they are not showing "proposed" coverage.

RE: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESS

I was in the Grand Canyon in September and had excellent Verizon Wireless cell phone service at the park. Used it for internet access as well as phone calls.
